On the day that my heart decided to fibrillate there were two golf carts that were directly
involved in saving my life. I had just hit my third shot of the morning when I found that I
couldn’t breathe. I told my friend Willis that I couldn’t continue. I saw him walk down and pick
up my ball. That was the last thing I saw.
Ted Bryan was in the foursome right behind us. Fortunately, he saw what happened and came up
to help. Willis and he scraped me off the course and put me in Ted’s cart and he hauled me
down to the road to meet the ambulance.
Willy Wall, another regular at Three Rivers Golf Course saw what was happening and headed his
cart for the club house to call 911. Willy had been in the foursome behind Ted.
I was floating between consciousness and unconsciousness as we proceeded up the road next to
the driving range. This was where we met the ambulance and they hauled me off to St. Johns
Hospital.
After two days in St. John’s emergency room. The doctors decided to send me to St. Vincents in
Portland. That was where they decided to install the latest combination pacemaker and
defibrillator.
After several weeks I was recovered enough to go back to golfing. Within a couple of weeks I
had just finished a round of golf when my back went out. I was just standing there when it felt as
if somebody beat me with a two-by-four.
From that point everything went downhill. Willis was having knee trouble so he had bought a
riding cart. I bought his electric caddy cart which carried the golf clubs. That, my golf clubs and
my little Honda were stolen.
Since my back precluded my walking I started riding in Willis’ cart. For years golfers had been
offering rides in their carts. My answer had always been, “No thinks I’m going to walk at least
until I’m ninety two”. I took quite a ribbing when I started riding ten years before my ninety
second birthday.
Anyway to bring this story to the end I decided I should get a cart of my own. Willis sometimes
goes on vacation and I would be grounded for that time. I put my name in for a garage. A garage
space is at a premium.
At the beginning of April a space became available and Willis Wall put his cart up for sale at the
same time.
I bought the cart and am now riding the little golf cart that helped save my life.
