Precise Musical Intonation

This is a paper that I wrote in 1981 about the physics and mechanics of intonation. People intuitively know when something is "in tune" or "out of tune".  This explains the physical principals behind good intonation.

It was supposed to be published in the magazine "Brass, Winds and Percussion", but they could never figure out how to edit it to fit their format. So it languished unseen for many years. Now it is available.

When I wrote this (with the help of a friend who knew how edit documents and to type) I could get some parts saying exactly what I wanted before others. I started cutting out the parts that were good and pasting them into a big book rather than re-typing them every time. Someone remarked that this was exactly the way a word processor worked. I knew then that I had to lay my hands on one of those. About that time, I was fortunate enough to get a Sinclair TX 80 computer. This was the first of about 15 or 20 various types and flavors of the wonderful machines that I've gotten my hands on and I look forward to getting many more.

Enjoy.
